PLAY TIME

2022 Summer

Project Introduction

This project is about designing event posters and kiosk interfaces for non-profit organizations to display in public spaces. Based on my research and work experience. I decided to focus on the design of educational aids for children.

The non-profit organization I researched is The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The NRPA is dedicated to building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation.
The missions of NRPA are to provide resources to professionals and advocates of playgrounds in every community.  As well as to provide education, networking, resources, and certification to playground operators to help them monitor and improve the safety of playgrounds.

Problem

  • On average, over 200,000 children a year require emergency room care due to a playground-related injury.
  • Out of those injured children, 15 children a year suffer fatal injuries.
  • Nearly 80% of all injuries involve falls. 90% of the most severe injuries are the resulting from falling from a significant height.
  • 58% of playground deaths are caused by asphyxiation.
  • Public playgrounds and schools account for 76% of injuries.
  • Male children make up 62% of children killed on playground equipment.

Solution

Design interactive interface and miniature games for kiosks to hel children recognize how to access the equipment properly as well as which equipment in the playground can help develop their body parts.

Goals

  • Help children use playgrounds properly and eliminate dangerous situations as much as possible.
  • Recognize bodily functions and exercise appropriately.

  • A child is sliding down from the slide. (Gravitational acceleration)
  • A child is climbing the climbing structure. (Development of overall motor skills, dexterity and hand-eye coordination)

Takeaways

I learned a lot through this project. The most challenging part is how to make it easier for children to accept this educational information while playing. I made a lot of changes in layout and content, and a lot of feedback I received from others helped me clarify my design decisions and come up with better solutions.
