PLANT
EXPERT

2020 Fall

Background and Problem

Plants can beautify the environment, improve mood and purify the air. That's one of the million reasons why people are choosing to grow plants at home. However, people might not know the behavior of a specific plant or how to take better care of their plants, which can be very frustrating, especially when the plants are suffering from pests and diseases.

Research Goal

To better understand why people grow plants and how they spend time and energy caring for them.

Research Methodology

  • User Interviews: Conduct interviews with 3 participants who have experience in growing plants.
  • User Surveys: Collecting user data on a statistically significant sample of the user base.

User Interview Recruiting and Script

Participant Screening

Participant Screening

From my interviews and problem mapping, I was able to understand users’ needs and frustrations. So I created two personas to help me keep this in mind.

Persona

Feature Matrix

For choosing the right direction, I did a competitive analysis of three applications. PictureThis, Planta and PlantSnap have comprehensive design experience in the features of identification, and I perfected PlantExpert by comparing their design and information architecture.

Users can choose their own plant skills and commitment levels to customize different needs. They can upload pictures of their own plants, with each growth progress. Comments can also be added to make it more specific. There is also a badge on the plant care icon in the navigation bar, reminding users to follow the guidelines. Users get tasks like watering and adding pictures of plants.

Brainstorming

Task Flow

Task Flow 1

Users want to find out what is wrong with her plants and get related information

Scenario: Yunling logs into the application to know what’s wrong with her plants, so she took a photo of the plant and uploaded it to the app to get a diagnosis, then she got some related information and the solutions.

Steps: Homepage > Find > Diagnose > Get Information & Solutions

Task Flow 2

Users want to set an alarm to remember to water or fertilize their plants.

Scenario: Emily wants to set an alarm for watering her sunflower. So she logs into the application and finds the “My Plants” page, she chooses the plant and clicks the set alarm button.

Steps: Homepage > My Plants > Set Alarm

Task Flow 3

Users want to share experience with others on community

Scenario: Emily would like to share a photo of her beautiful peonies. So she logs into the app, uploads the photo and adds a caption for it.

Steps: Homepage > Community > Create Sharing

Usability Studies and Testing

Screener Survey Questions
  • Describe your actions going through Task 1 (Diagnose a plant)?
  • Overall, how would you rate the app (1 being the hardest and 5 being the easiest) ?
  • What do you like the least during the task?
  • How easy or difficult was it to find what you were looking for on the app?
  • Which, if any, of the issues below have you encountered during your experience with the app?
Survey Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/K5FCC66
Based on the result of this survey, there are 11 participants are eligible and 3 of them participated the usability test.
Result and Learnings
User 1 was struggled on the "Find plant" page. After viewing the task, he was able to find the button in the upper right corner of the page. He suggested that it would be very helpful if there were instruction tips at the top.
User 2 knows very quickly which button she's looking for, and the functionality is fine, but she cares more about the icons. She suggests that icons should have name label at the bottom of each icon, which will help users know what do they mean and what t do with them.
What Changed:
I removed the Add image label and added a tip text on the top of the diagnose page. The add image label looks exactly the same as other buttons which is consuming the user when they are trying to take/upload photos. It would be more clear for users to understand what to do and what to click.
I changed the geometric icons and switched them to pictographic icons. And refined the navigation bar icons and add text at the bottom of each navigation icon to remind users what the buttons represent.

Grid System

Grid System is shown in sample screenshots of the prototype app “Plant Expert”
The working area is 375 pixels wide. Four Columns grid was applied with each column measuring 70 pixels wide.
Gutters are 20 pixels. The margins are 17 pixels. The padding is 12 pixels. Screen Headers are 24 points.

TASK 3: Users want to share experience with others on community

What I Learned

Trying to get as much feedback as possible from potential users is the most important part of my design process. Through user research, I always urge myself to find out what they really need and what I can do for them. and this usually will take my thinking to another level.

I learned a lot from the users, the way they grow their flowers, the amount of time and energy they dedicate to caring for their plants every day, etc. The love and understanding of plants made me realize that UX design can run through every corner of our life.
